Tuscan Mountain Cottage
- SQM 70
The house is part of a wonderful stone-built house at the top of a short mountain road, very accessible from the motorway (7 mins) but far enough removed to be a real retreat. Every room has wooden floorboards and beams, it is simple and rustic but comfortable and well equipped. Each room has a view over the mountain.
The house has a living room with a wood-burning stove, a kitchen and dining room with both a gas cooker/oven and a wood-burning stove for heating and cooking. The bathroom is downstairs and has a shower, the water is heated with a boiler that can use either electricity or a wood fire.
Upstairs is a main bedroom with a double bed and an additional living/sitting room (with sofa bed). Upstairs again, we have converted the attic (low ceiling) to be an additional space with Velux roof window and a further sofa bed. This room can be used as a further sitting area or an additional bedroom.
With the peace and quiet at night, the mountain air, and the bedroom shutters closed it's impossible not to sleep very well indeed!
Outside there is ample parking and an area with table and chairs for al fresco dining. There are a number of waymarked trails in the area which can be walked or (for the fit!) cycled. We have two mountain bikes available for hire, and there are plenty of maps and guides in the house. Although the house is at the top of the mountain road, there is a weekend pizzeria within walking distance.
The house is very well located, being within easy day trip reach of Arezzo, Florence, Bologna, Assisi, Siena, Ravenna and even Rome. However many guests prefer to relax and enjoy a mixture of local walks, wildlife and food, and exploring the local area itself, which offers the towns of Sanespolcro, Bagno di Romagna, Anghiari, Gubbio and Perugia, the art of Piero della Francesca and della Robbia, the trail of St Francis of Assisi and the local mountain monasteries of La Verna and Camaldoli.
